Katniss Messy Bun Hat Pattern

Katniss crochet beanie

I’m beyond thrilled to share the Messy Bun Katniss hat pattern with you! The pattern was design by Bella Haken & Zoo, and she so graciously allowed me to publish this pattern on the website. There’s a lot of different “messy bun” beanies out there, but this one stands out. This hat is chunky and full of texture making it oh so warm as well as unique! Here’s yours truly wearing the one I made:

The grey hat to the left is the Bella Haken & Zoo’s photo, and the turquoise hat to the right is the one I crocheted.

Here’s the supplies you’ll need-

Yarn– The pattern says she used a Dutch brand yarn but you can use
any yarn for a H/5.0mm hook. The yarn I used is Red Heart in Aruba Sea for my hat.
Hooks– I used an H hook (5.0mm) for the brim and an I (5.5mm) for the rest of the hat
A needle to weave in ends
Scissors

Special stitches:
Front Post Single Crochet (Fpsc): Insert hook from front to back around post of stitch
indicated. [YO and draw through 2 loops on hook].
Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc): YO, insert hook behind post of stitch (insert hook from
back to front of stitch), YO, pull up a loop, YO, (pull through 2 loops) twice.
Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc): YO, insert hook behind post of stitch (insert hook from
front to back of stitch), YO, pull up a loop, YO, (pull through 2 loops) twice.

Pattern notes– *Ch 2 doesn’t count as a stitch unless otherwise noted.

Ribbed Brim :
Chain 9
R1: In back loops only, single crochet 1 in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (8 sc).
R2-60: Chain 1, turn. In back loops only, single crochet in each stitch across (8sc)
If your brim needs to be bigger, keep going until it’s the right measurement for your head. Make sure you end up with an even number of stitches not an odd number.

Close the Brim– Bring both ends together and slip stitch down going through both
thicknesses. This is your seam, and you don’t cut the yarn but continue on to the top part of the pattern.

The Hood
Switch to your 5.5 H hook, and work the rest of your hat

(My notes- Before working row 1, I chained 1 and made one row of single crochets around the band without skipping any stitches and made a sl st in the first sc. After that, I chained 1 and crocheted one more row of single crochets working in the back loop only and made a sl st in the first sc.)

R1: Chain 2, work 60 dc as evenly as possible around edge of band. Join with sl st to first dc (60
dc) (my notes- since my hat had 62 rows for the band, I did 62 dc.)

R2: Chain 2, FPdc in next stitch, BPdc in next, repeat until you reach the last stitch. Join with sl
st to first FPdc

R3: Chain 1, Fpsc in every stitch across, (Do not alternate like the previous row) this will give you
that straight line. Join to the first Fpdc.

R4: Chain 2, Dc in each stitch across, (You’re working in stitches of row 2) Join with sl st
to 1st Dc.

R5: Same as R3

R6: Same as R4

Repeat Round 2-6 one more time , and after that row 2 and 3.

Finishing Off Your Hat:

*Single crochet in next 2 stitches, and then make a single crochet decrease* repeat from *to* all the way around and then sl st to 1st st of each row, and ch1. Repeat that 2 more times for a total of 3 rows. Once you’ve done 3 rows of *to* slip stitch into the first stitch, cut your yarn, and then pull the yarn through your stitch to finish off!
You should end up with 26 stitches.
NOTE- If you started with 60 you’ll end up with 26 stitches.
**If you want the hole on top smaller go ahead and do another decrease**

(My notes- I did two rows of *to* and on my third row I single crocheted in one stitch and then made a decrease, and repeated that pattern all around. I also added a single crochet all around the bottom of my brim.)

If you want to make a non-messy bun version, keep decreasing until you have about 6-9 stitches and then sew closed. Top with a Pom Pom for an adorable finish!

Katniss Messy Bun Multi-Colored Hat

After completing the solid colored one, I wanted to make one that had multiple colors. I chose to go with navy, pink, and white for this one:

For this hat, I used a 5.0mm H hook for the band, and an 5.5mm I hook for the rest of the hat. Both of our heads are 21 in circumference so this pattern fit both of us perfectly.

My band consists of 10 chains and then 60 rows of single crochet in the back loop only -just like the original pattern calls for and it fits perfect. After I completed the band and closed it, I worked 60 single crochets all around. For the lines (r3), I accidentally did fpdc stitches instead of fbsc. I ended up liking it since it made the hat thicker and gave me a cleaner seam so it was a win. I followed the pattern alternating colors for each row until I was ready to finish off my hat per the pattern.

To finish off your hat, basically crochet up to this part- Repeat Round 2-6 one more time, and after that row 2 and 3.

Once done, you’re going to do 3 more rows:

Row 1: Chain 1 and then single crochet in the next 2 stitches and then make a single crochet decrease. Repeat from * to * all the way around. Slip stitch in to the first single crochet to finish the row.

Row 2: Chain 1 and *single crochet in the next stitch and then make a single crochet decrease in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * all the way around. Slip stitch into the first singe crochet to finish the row.

Row 3: Chain 1 and make decreases all the way around and then finish off!

To make a decrease:
1.) slide your hook in the top two loops
2.) yarn over
3.) pull through
4.) slide your hook in the next stitch
5.) yarn over
6.) pull through.
You will have 3 loops on your hook- 7.) yarn over and pull through all three.

Here’s what it looks like inside out:

Katniss Top Down

Another version of this hat is the top down version and it’s worked as you probably guessed- from the top down to the bottom. 🙂 Here’s a picture of it here with a fur pom-pom on it:

  1. Thank you so much for this great pattern.
Just made this hat with Deborah Norville Everyday in toasted marshmallow. It turned out beautiful.
It’s a little chunky and will be nice and warm.
Fun pattern to work with, but wish the directions also extended to a full hat.

  2. Thanks for the pattern. On the top down version, row 11 do you work the double crochet in the fpsc from the previous row or the DC from the row before? I’ve been doing it in the DC and wanted to double check. Thanks!
