Instructions:

Round 1: Using the obsidian yarn and a 3.75mm crochet hook, make a magic circle and chain 4 (counts as the first treble crochet stitch). Work 15 treble crochet stitches in the circle and join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain 4. You will have 16 posts including the chain 4. Cut yarn leaving ~3in tail, yarn over, and pull thru tail to fasten off.

Treble stitch:

  • Yarn over twice. Insert the hook in magic circle, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
  • Yarn over, and pull through two loops.
  • Yarn over, and pull through two loops.
  • Yarn over, and pull through both loops on the hook.

Round 2: Attach the brown agate yarn in any chain space, chain 2, and create 16 puff stitches in each chain space. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first puff stitch, cut yarn leaving ~3in tail, yarn over, and pull thru to fasten off.

Puff stitch:

  • Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop. (5 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up loop. (7 loops on hook).
  • Yarn over, pull yarn through all loops on the hook, and chain 1 to secure the stitch.

Round 3: Attach the yellow jasper yarn in any chain-1 space. Chain 2 and create 16 cluster stitches around- notes:

To make the first cluster stitch *Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops.* Repeat * to* 2x more. Once there’s 4 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops to complete the stitch and chain 2.

After creating the first cluster stitch, finish the row by making a cluster stitch in each chain space with 2 chains between each of them. You’ll have 16 cluster stitches in total. Join with a slip stitch in the beginning cluster stitch, chain 2, and turn.

Cluster stitch:

  • Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (5 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, and pull yarn through all loops on the hook.

Round 4: *Create a 2 double crochet cluster stitch (2dc-CL), chain 1, create another 2dc-CL, and chain 2.* Repeat *to* in each chain space. You’ll have a total of 32 2dc-CL stitches. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first stitch, cut yarn leaving ~3in tail, yarn over, and pull thru to fasten off.

2 double crochet cluster stitch:

Make 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, make 3 half double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, and then make 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space. This forms the first side.

Make the first full corner by creating 3 treble crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, chain 3, and create another 3 treble crochet stitches in the same ch 2 space.

Next you’ll crochet the second side by making 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, then 3 half double crochet stitches in the following chain 2 space, and 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space.

Now you’ll crochet the second corner by making 3 treble crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, chain 3, and create another 3 treble crochet stitches in the same chain 2 space.

Crochet the third side by making 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, then 3 half double crochet stitches in the following chain 2 space, and 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space.

Make the third corner by making 3 treble crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, chain 3, and create another 3 treble crochet stitches in the same chain 2 space.

Create the last side by making 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space, then 3 half double crochet stitches in the following chain 2 space, and 3 double crochet stitches in the next chain 2 space.

To complete your last corner, create 3 double crochet stitches in the same space as the beginning 3 treble stitches, chain 3, join with a slip stitch in the top of the first treble crochet stitch, cut yarn leaving ~3in tail, yarn over, and pull thru to fasten off.

Use a needle to weave in all the ends and voila you’ve created a Sunflower Burst Granny Square!
